Having been on display at the Gloucestershire Warwiskshire Railway’s “GWR175” event, the unique 1949-built Gas Turbine locomotive, number 18000, was moved to the Didcot Railway Centre in July 2011. The locomotive is currently ‘out of gauge’ because the gas turbine unit had previously been removed many years ago so the loco rides high. To allow safe transit between Gloucestershire and Didcot, we had to crane the locomotive body off its bogies and transport each of the items separately.

The cranes set up in the car park at Toddington with the road lorry extending its trailer for the loco body.

The lorry is then positioned under the empty loco body which is carefully landed onto the trailer.

In Didcot West Yard, the wheels have been delivered now the cranes set up to lift the loco off the lorry.

The wheels are then barred into position underneath the locomotive and the body slowly lowered down.

With two spreader beams, the loco body is slowly lifted off its bogies, which are then wheeled out of the way.

Having been fastened down, the loco sets off for Didcot. The wheels are loaded onto separate lorries.

The body of 18000 is slowly lifted off the lorry with just enough clearance to allow it to move out of the way.

The locomotive, now fully complete, awaits a shunter to transfer it to the Didcot Railway Centre.
